Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Male or Female?

This is a question we are asked very often. In all fairness there is very little difference in Cavaliers. This breed does not exhibit the strong gender differences seen in other breeds.

Before you decide on a male or female, remember Cavaliers just love their people no matter what the gender. As a breed they are super affectionate, well rounded, and in our opinion the best breed you will ever share your life with!

If you are you undecided about adopting a male puppy? The stereotypes for males, such as hiking of the leg to mark territory, humping on things, etc… are common reasons why most people do not adopt a male. Here are a few opinions of our experience that might help you in your decision making. If you neuter a male between 7 – 10 months, you would remove the normal male hormonal tendencies as mentioned above. The desirable traits would be an even more obedient and affectionate male. Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as "marking" or "humping" once the testosterone levels recedes after neutering, most of these behaviors (if they ever existed) will disappear., females can be a bit more independent . A female will love you but a male will be in love with you. Males tend to be more playful even in their elder years.

From our own experience, males that have been neutered early tend to potty train easier and quicker and they will tend to squat like females. Unless you spay your female puppy she will come into heat every 6 months for 3 weeks.

Don’t get us wrong, females make excellent pets, but males make excellent pets too.

As far as attitudes go both genders are very loving and always ready to please, just as a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be. The differences you see should not be based on gender but, on the individual distinct personalities of each puppy. Keep in mind every cavalier, male or female has its’ own unique personality. My advice is, have an open mind when selecting your life long companion . Don’t close the door on a puppy because of preconceived notions of gender. Don’t let Gender stand in your way. Either way you go, male or female, above all it’s a Cavalier you can’t go wrong. We spend every day with our puppies and every puppy has a different personality . Pick from your heart and you won’t be disappointed.
